Sofia Coppola, daughter of director Francis Ford Coppola, was born in New York City. She made her feature-film directing debut with The Virgin Suicides (1999). Four years later she received the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for her second feature film Lost in Translation (2003), and became the first American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Director. Her third film was the biopic Marie Antoinette (2006) which screened at the Festival de Cannes, where it received a standing ovation. Sofia won a Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival for her fourth film Somewhere (2010). Her film The Bling Ring (2013) opened the Un Certain Regard section of Festival de Cannes. Coppola made history as only the second woman to win the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival for film The Beguiled (2017).
